Art in Gothic Quarter

Museums and places worth visiting

About this guide

The Gothic Quarter is the historic center of Barcelona. It offers a variety of places to visit: remains of the Roman wall, medieval streets, and cathedrals, prominent museums, and galleries. Here is the list of my favorite ones.

Picasso Museum

🎨 Museum of the 20th century genius

It is a non-negotiable stop in Barcelona for anyone with a true taste for art or those pretending to have one. The museum offers a delightful experience, showcasing the entire spectrum of Picasso's artistic evolution through his paintings, with several exceptional masterpieces on display.

Free tours are held every Thursday after 5 PM and on the first Sunday of each month. Pre-booking via their website is required.

It is a classic Gothic church. In Barcelona, this architectural style has its own peculiarities. It makes this church even more notable. Come here to spend a few minutes relaxing after a walk and hiding from the heat. Symmetrical forms and stained glass windows ask to be in your Instagram feed. Don’t forget to act respectful inside.

Palau Martorell is an art hub known for hosting works of artists like Alphonse Mucha. The building dates from 1900, so pay attention to the intricate details of its architecture as well. Exhibitions change constantly — check their website before a visit.

This is an old 19th-century market building. It now hosts an active excavation of a well-preserved street from the 1700s. Open Tuesday to Saturday, it's a free way to experience history and maybe even to witness archeologists covered in dust with a brush and back pain. A must-visit for history lovers.
